The Society was established in 1990 as the 'Blakeney History Group' but changed it's name later to reflect the wider geographical membership and interest in this part of North Norfolk. The main aims of the society are:
to study the history of the Blakeney Haven and adjacent hinterland
to make available the results of such studies
to collect documents and other records relating to the area and make them available
to encourage members and others to take an active interest in local history
The Society holds regular lectures, organises visits, publishes an annual journal and newsletters, and in 2003 opened a History Centre at the rear of the Village Hall in Blakeney. This resource centre caters for many interests from those who are just curious about the people, buildings and coastline around Blakeney Haven and inland along the Lower Glaven Valley or have family connections and memories of the area, to others with a more serious interest in local history. Every year it runs a course, sometimes in partnership with the University of East Anglia, on some aspect of local history. Benefits of membership include regular lectures on local history, use of the resources in the History Centre, receiving a copy of the Society’s journal ‘The Glaven Historian’ and two Newsletters each year, and the opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts.
